الْقَمَرِ

The Moon

The Moon

55 verses Meccan

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

verse 1

ٱقۡتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلۡقَمَرُ

Translation: The Hour (of Judgment) is nigh, and the moon is cleft asunder

verse 2

وَإِن يَرَوۡاْ ءَايَةࣰ يُعۡرِضُواْ وَيَقُولُواْ سِحۡرࣱ مُّسۡتَمِرࣱّ

Translation: But if they see a Sign, they turn away, and say, "This is (but) transient magic

verse 3

وَكَذَّبُواْ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓاْ أَهۡوَآءَهُمۡۚ وَكُلُّ أَمۡرࣲ مُّسۡتَقِرࣱّ

Translation: They reject (the warning) and follow their (own) lusts but every matter has its appointed time

verse 4

وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزۡدَجَرٌ

Translation: There have already come to them Recitals wherein there is (enough) to check (them)

verse 5

حِكۡمَةُۢ بَٰلِغَةࣱۖ فَمَا تُغۡنِ ٱلنُّذُرُ

Translation: Mature wisdom;- but (the preaching of) Warners profits them not

verse 6

فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡۘ يَوۡمَ يَدۡعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَيۡءࣲ نُّكُرٍ

Translation: Therefore, (O Prophet,) turn away from them. The Day that the Caller will call (them) to a terrible affair

verse 7

خُشَّعًا أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ يَخۡرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمۡ جَرَادࣱ مُّنتَشِرࣱ

Translation: They will come forth,- their eyes humbled - from (their) graves, (torpid) like locusts scattered abroad

verse 8

مُّهۡطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِۖ يَقُولُ ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ هَٰذَا يَوۡمٌ عَسِرࣱ

Translation: Hastening, with eyes transfixed, towards the Caller!- "Hard is this Day!", the Unbelievers will say

verse 9

۞كَذَّبَتۡ قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحࣲ فَكَذَّبُواْ عَبۡدَنَا وَقَالُواْ مَجۡنُونࣱ وَٱزۡدُجِرَ

Translation: Before them the People of Noah rejected (their messenger): they rejected Our servant, and said, "Here is one possessed!", and he was driven out

verse 10

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّي مَغۡلُوبࣱ فَٱنتَصِرۡ

Translation: Then he called on his Lord: "I am one overcome: do Thou then help (me)

verse 11

فَفَتَحۡنَآ أَبۡوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءࣲ مُّنۡهَمِرࣲ

Translation: So We opened the gates of heaven, with water pouring forth

verse 12

وَفَجَّرۡنَا ٱلۡأَرۡضَ عُيُونࣰ ا فَٱلۡتَقَى ٱلۡمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمۡرࣲ قَدۡ قُدِرَ

Translation: And We caused the earth to gush forth with springs, so the waters met (and rose) to the extent decreed

verse 13

وَحَمَلۡنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلۡوَٰحࣲ وَدُسُرࣲ

Translation: But We bore him on an (Ark) made of broad planks and caulked with palm-fibre

verse 14

تَجۡرِي بِأَعۡيُنِنَا جَزَآءࣰ لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ

Translation: She floats under our eyes (and care): a recompense to one who had been rejected (with scorn)

verse 15

وَلَقَد تَّرَكۡنَٰهَآ ءَايَةࣰ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ

Translation: And We have left this as a Sign (for all time): then is there any that will receive admonition

verse 16

فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Translation: But how (terrible) was My Penalty and My Warning

verse 17

وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ

Translation: And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition

verse 18

كَذَّبَتۡ عَادࣱ فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Translation: The 'Ad (people) (too) rejected (Truth): then how terrible was My Penalty and My Warning

verse 19

إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ رِيحࣰ ا صَرۡصَرࣰ ا فِي يَوۡمِ نَحۡسࣲ مُّسۡتَمِرࣲّ

Translation: For We sent against them a furious wind, on a Day of violent Disaster

verse 20

تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمۡ أَعۡجَازُ نَخۡلࣲ مُّنقَعِرࣲ

Translation: Plucking out men as if they were roots of palm-trees torn up (from the ground)

verse 21

فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Translation: Yea, how (terrible) was My Penalty and My Warning

verse 22

وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ

Translation: But We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition

verse 23

كَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِ

Translation: The Thamud (also) rejected (their) Warners

verse 24

فَقَالُوٓاْ أَبَشَرࣰ ا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدࣰ ا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذࣰ ا لَّفِي ضَلَٰلࣲ وَسُعُرٍ

Translation: For they said: "What! a man! a Solitary one from among ourselves! shall we follow such a one? Truly should we then be straying in mind, and mad

verse 25

أَءُلۡقِيَ ٱلذِّكۡرُ عَلَيۡهِ مِنۢ بَيۡنِنَا بَلۡ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرࣱ

Translation: Is it that the Message is sent to him, of all people amongst us? Nay, he is a liar, an insolent one

verse 26

سَيَعۡلَمُونَ غَدࣰ ا مَّنِ ٱلۡكَذَّابُ ٱلۡأَشِرُ

Translation: Ah! they will know on the morrow, which is the liar, the insolent one

verse 27

إِنَّا مُرۡسِلُواْ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتۡنَةࣰ لَّهُمۡ فَٱرۡتَقِبۡهُمۡ وَٱصۡطَبِرۡ

Translation: For We will send the she-camel by way of trial for them. So watch them, (O Salih), and possess thyself in patience

verse 28

وَنَبِّئۡهُمۡ أَنَّ ٱلۡمَآءَ قِسۡمَةُۢ بَيۡنَهُمۡۖ كُلُّ شِرۡبࣲ مُّحۡتَضَرࣱ

Translation: And tell them that the water is to be divided between them: Each one's right to drink being brought forward (by suitable turns)

verse 29

فَنَادَوۡاْ صَاحِبَهُمۡ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ

Translation: But they called to their companion, and he took a sword in hand, and hamstrung (her)

verse 30

فَكَيۡفَ كَانَ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Translation: Ah! how (terrible) was My Penalty and My Warning

verse 31

إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ صَيۡحَةࣰ وَٰحِدَةࣰ فَكَانُواْ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلۡمُحۡتَظِرِ

Translation: For We sent against them a single Mighty Blast, and they became like the dry stubble used by one who pens cattle

verse 32

وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ

Translation: And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition

verse 33

كَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوطِۭ بِٱلنُّذُرِ

Translation: The people of Lut rejected (his) warning

verse 34

إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطࣲۖ نَّجَّيۡنَٰهُم بِسَحَرࣲ

Translation: We sent against them a violent Tornado with showers of stones, (which destroyed them), except Lut's household: them We delivered by early Dawn

verse 35

نِّعۡمَةࣰ مِّنۡ عِندِنَاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي مَن شَكَرَ

Translation: As a Grace from Us: thus do We reward those who give thanks

verse 36

وَلَقَدۡ أَنذَرَهُم بَطۡشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوۡاْ بِٱلنُّذُرِ

Translation: And (Lut) did warn them of Our Punishment, but they disputed about the Warning

verse 37

وَلَقَدۡ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيۡفِهِۦ فَطَمَسۡنَآ أَعۡيُنَهُمۡ فَذُوقُواْ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Translation: And they even sought to snatch away his guests from him, but We blinded their eyes. (They heard:) "Now taste ye My Wrath and My Warning

verse 38

وَلَقَدۡ صَبَّحَهُم بُكۡرَةً عَذَابࣱ مُّسۡتَقِرࣱّ

Translation: Early on the morrow an abiding Punishment seized them

verse 39

فَذُوقُواْ عَذَابِي وَنُذُرِ

Translation: So taste ye My Wrath and My Warning

verse 40

وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ

Translation: And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition

verse 41

وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَ ءَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ ٱلنُّذُرُ

Translation: To the People of Pharaoh, too, aforetime, came Warners (from Allah)

verse 42

كَذَّبُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُمۡ أَخۡذَ عَزِيزࣲ مُّقۡتَدِرٍ

Translation: The (people) rejected all Our Signs; but We seized them with such Penalty (as comes) from One Exalted in Power, able to carry out His Will

verse 43

أَكُفَّارُكُمۡ خَيۡرࣱ مِّنۡ أُوْلَٰٓئِكُمۡ أَمۡ لَكُم بَرَآءَةࣱ فِي ٱلزُّبُرِ

Translation: Are your Unbelievers, (O Quraish), better than they? Or have ye an immunity in the Sacred Books

verse 44

أَمۡ يَقُولُونَ نَحۡنُ جَمِيعࣱ مُّنتَصِرࣱ

Translation: Or do they say: "We acting together can defend ourselves

verse 45

سَيُهۡزَمُ ٱلۡجَمۡعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَ

Translation: Soon will their multitude be put to flight, and they will show their backs

verse 46

بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوۡعِدُهُمۡ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدۡهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ

Translation: Nay, the Hour (of Judgment) is the time promised them (for their full recompense): And that Hour will be most grievous and most bitter

verse 47

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ فِي ضَلَٰلࣲ وَسُعُرࣲ

Translation: Truly those in sin are the ones straying in mind, and mad

verse 48

يَوۡمَ يُسۡحَبُونَ فِي ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمۡ ذُوقُواْ مَسَّ سَقَرَ

Translation: The Day they will be dragged through the Fire on their faces, (they will hear:) "Taste ye the touch of Hell

verse 49

إِنَّا كُلَّ شَيۡءٍ خَلَقۡنَٰهُ بِقَدَرࣲ

Translation: Verily, all things have We created in proportion and measure

verse 50

وَمَآ أَمۡرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةࣱ كَلَمۡحِۭ بِٱلۡبَصَرِ

Translation: And Our Command is but a single (Act),- like the twinkling of an eye

verse 51

وَلَقَدۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَآ أَشۡيَاعَكُمۡ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ

Translation: And (oft) in the past, have We destroyed gangs like unto you: then is there any that will receive admonition

verse 52

وَكُلُّ شَيۡءࣲ فَعَلُوهُ فِي ٱلزُّبُرِ

Translation: All that they do is noted in (their) Books (of Deeds)

verse 53

وَكُلُّ صَغِيرࣲ وَكَبِيرࣲ مُّسۡتَطَرٌ

Translation: Every matter, small and great, is on record

verse 54

إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّٰتࣲ وَنَهَرࣲ

Translation: As to the Righteous, they will be in the midst of Gardens and Rivers

verse 55

فِي مَقۡعَدِ صِدۡقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكࣲ مُّقۡتَدِرِۭ

Translation: In an Assembly of Truth, in the Presence of a Sovereign Omnipotent
